Charlotte Mason must reads. I couldn’t imagine homeschooling this way without the knowledge and experience of so many books that I have read in the first few years of our homeschooling journey. Of course, I have a few favorites that I have read several times. Yet, it seems that with every reading I fall more in love with this method of learning.

Charlotte Mason Must Reads - A great list of books to learn all about the Charlotte Mason method of education. |

Charlotte Mason Must Reads

My all time favorite book is A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflection on the Gentle Art of Learning. This book was the first book that I read on this method, but I absolutely love the way it is written. It is easy to read in no time, but also a perfect resource book to getting started.

Pocketful of Pinecones: Nature Study with the Gentle Art of Learning: A Story for Mother Culture was the second book I read, and I fell in love with the way this book plays out in story form what it looks like to live a Charlotte Mason way. This is a perfect book for a Charlotte Mason must read for moms who are wanting some inspiration and peek into a Charlotte Mason family.

A Charlotte Mason Education: A Home Schooling How-to Manual was another book that I read early on and was so helpful with the tips on how to do Charlotte Mason as home schooling.

Charlotte Mason Topics – Habits: The Mother’s Secret to Success (Volume 1) takes everything that Charlotte Mason wrote in her original series on habits and puts it into one convenient book. Oh, the joy! I have read her original series and still do from time to time, a little at a time, but I love having topics in one place.

Charlotte Mason Topics – The Outdoor Life of Children: The Importance of Nature Study and Outdoor Activities (Volume 2), like the first in the series, takes everything that Charlotte Mason wrote about Outdoors, nature studies and outdoor activities and puts them in one place.

Charlotte Mason Topics – Ideas and Books (Volume 3), continuing the series this includes everything that Charlotte Mason wrote about ideas and books, which were the basis of curriculum for using the Charlotte Mason way. If you are interested in using living books this is a Charlotte Mason must read!

Home Education is the first book of the Charlotte Mason’s original series that contains a collection of six lectures by Charlotte Mason about what home education looks like.

Parents and Children is the second book of the Charlotte Mason’s original series to encourage and instruct parents on a variety of topics that were written in 26 articles of the original Parent’s Review magazines.

School Education is the third book of the Charlotte Mason’s original series and focuses on curriculum for ages 9-12.

Ourselves: Our Souls and Bodies is the fourth book of the Charlotte Mason’s original series and is written directly for children. There are two sections of this book. The first section is written to elementary ages, where the second section is written for older children.

Formation of Character is the fifth book of Charlotte Mason’s original series and is one that can stand alone. It is a Charlotte Mason must read for those who understand the importance of character formation in children.

Towards a Philosophy of Education is Charlotte Mason’s final book in her series where she was able to watch her method in action for years and includes her 20 principles.

Consider This: Charlotte Mason and the Classical Traditions is not a how-to book, but a ‘why you should’ book based on how some of Charlotte Mason methods can be linked to that of classical ideals of learning.

A Twaddle Free Education: An Introduction to Charlotte Mason’s Timeless Educational Ideas is a book that will help you grasp the understand of twaddle, water down education and give you a clear understanding of what her ideas were on education.
